Carrying a bike in a cardboard box on a plane

It might be the oldest way to carry a bike in a cardboard box from your local bike dealer on a plane. Let me say: that was the beginning. A box is a simple thing to store something. In the common use a box is closed and nothing can get lost.

If there were bike boxes at the airport, that would be the easiest way. But most airlines don't care about how you pack the bike - they just expect it... Some airlines insist on compliance with their rules the hard way, how a cyclist can manage this logistic obstacle is not the question... How can we carry a big bike box monster to the airport? By taxi? Well, of course, but that could be the same price like the fee for the bike transport on the plane itself. An expensive solution, though the bike box is free of charge. But the advantage of this solution is that a bike dealer is a good place to store a bike into a bike box in case you need any tools to unmount something. A cardboard bike box is also a good place for some extra luggage. If your regular bag weight is out of limit you can store some heavy things into the bike box. But many airlines don't like this trick. So I didn't say anything about it ;-). By the way: Most cycle shops are happy to give the boxes away. I don't know anybody who had to pay for a cardboard bike box.
