Carry your bicycle unpacked in an aeroplane

Sounds like a love story: A naked bike floating over the clouds. Especially the Scandinavian carriers are very relaxed about your bike. They will handle it carefully without any cover. They have realized that an unpacked bicycle is much easier to handle than a packed one (like in a box). First continental airlines like Lufthansa have realized this, too. Hope more airlines will follow.

Sounds like little work? Hardly any, but some things have to be done...

What can I write when there is nothing to do? Still some small jobs are waiting for you. Some mechanical to dos: Please remove the pedals and turn the handle bar. A violently discussed topic: Deflating the tyres - yes or no? From the technical point of view there is no reason to do so, no risk for the tube or for the plane. But most people don't know anything about this. My advice: It takes less energy to deflate the tyres half way than to discuss it with the check-in personnel. As I said, just half way. It saves you time and energy after the flight when you have to remount your bike. Further advice: Switch your gear, bring the gear close to the frame to protect it. Switch your back rear gear, bring the chain on the second inner rim to have some space for the spokes to protect both. Save your bell and bike computer. Remove the computer from the socket and turn your bell and the socket down. Your bike lock should be fixed to the frame, the locker socket could be broken otherwise. Fix the socket with a tension belt or a cable tie. Don't lock the bike for the transport. That could mean trouble for your spokes. I have never heard of a bike stolen by any airline.
